Intersections worked with Allenheads Contemporary Arts (ACA) to develop a lab event on the theme of 'Future This.' This was an invitation only event bringing together a range of artists and an inter-disciplinary group of professionals and researchers. The idea grew from ACA's Base Elements residency programme which explored our relationships, from the spiritual to the scientific, with the materiality of the earth, and Intersections’ Planetary Breakdown conference held in March 2010.
‘Future this…’ explored models for future living and involved research and collaboration between creative and scientific fields. Encouraging partnerships and collaborations with scientists, science fictionists, philosophers, economists, environmentalists and forecasters, Future This discussed an envisaging of the future that is not utopian, but creative and challenging.
The event acted as a catalyst for ACA’s Future This residency series; on the heels of a global recession and the ever increasing concerns over climate change, energy supplies and of course man’s ability to self-destruct, ACA’s residency scheme will invite artists to take a positive role in visioning for the future. For Intersections it built on the work already undertaken in connection with Planetary Breakdown and explored the potential for further research in collaboration with Newcastle University on the broad theme of sustainability.
